Understanding ProjectForce documents

In ProjectForce, a document is more than just a data file. An ProjectForce document is composed of a file plus information about the file, called metadata that is stored separately from the file. The file provides the content of a document. A document without content (no file attached) is called a record.

ProjectForce documents allow you to do things that a file alone cannot, including:

• Change or add information about a document without editing the file
• Change the content of a document without changing the information about the document
• Create a document to represent a file that does not yet exist, to which you can add the file later
• Create an ProjectForce document to represent a hard copy document that does not have an electronic file
• Place a document in multiple folders without creating multiple copies of the file
• Maintain multiple revisions of the same document using the same file name.
